Causes of Tooth Discolouration – All Teeth Are Not The Same!

The most common cause of yellow or discoloured teeth is from what we do to our teeth over a period of time. Cigarette smoking, drinking coffee, black tea or red wine as well as eating certain foods such as curries, berries and beetroot can all stain teeth.

Some mouthrinses can also discolour teeth if used over a  period of time. More recently, the use of charcoal based toothpaste can quickly stain teeth as well as white fillings. Drinking acidic drinks like soft drinks, sports drinks and energy drinks can dissolve the enamel coating from the teeth and cause the yellower inside part of the teeth to show. Some medications taken early in childhood can also darken the adult teeth and old fillings can also make your teeth appear discoloured.

For these reasons if you are wanting to do any tooth whitening treatments it is important to determine what has caused the discolouration of the teeth.
